Bold statement: Rodents are quietly turning your car into a costly battleground, with damage bills climbing into the thousands and stories that read like car-owners’ worst nightmare.
A growing wave of rodent infestations is driving thousands of pounds in damage to cars across the UK, and drivers are feeling the squeeze. Aviva reports a 28% rise in vehicle damage claims caused by mice and rats between 2023 and 2024, while the average rodent-related claim increased by 11% to £2,494.
James Driscoll, Aviva’s motor claims manager, explains the seasonal risk: “In winter, mice and rats search for warmer places to nest and can squeeze into the tiniest gaps—grilles, vents, or even open windows. Once inside a car, they can cause extensive damage, from chewed wires and interiors to nesting under the hood.”
Tony Smith of All Aspects Pest Control, based in Reading, isn’t mincing words about the scale: the UK rat population is “out of control.” He notes he fields up to four motor-related pest calls each week. He attributes the surge to modern wiring looms using bioplastics, which he believes attract rodents.
The financial fallout is substantial. Smith cites a recent case involving a Porsche Cayenne that required a full wiring loom replacement; the repair, including diagnostics, came to £7,000.
Garage shops are also contending with pest-related damage. Lewis Devin of Ravenscroft Motors in Fleet, Hampshire, recalls a Ford Ranger whose gearbox wiring loom was chewed, costing £200 to fix—and the problem recurred the following week. Other stories include foam engine covers gnawed through and an interior fan clogged with nuts stashed by a rodent.
Administration data paints a broad picture: between 2023 and mid-2025, UK councils recorded about half a million rodent infestations. The British Pest Control Association reports that more than half of its members have seen more rat-related callouts in the last five years.
Smith notes a key constraint for pest professionals: they’re not permitted to leave permanent poison bait in place. Laws protect field mice and other wildlife, and rats are notoriously wary of unfamiliar substances, making pest control tricky and costly for motorists seeking long-term relief. In short, the problem isn’t just cleaning up the mess—it’s navigating legal and ethical boundaries while trying to protect vehicles from relentless nibblers.
