The upcoming sci-fi thriller game, Precognition, from Half Mermaid Studio, is a fascinating project with a unique origin story. Sam Barlow, the studio's creative mind, reveals that the concept emerged from his daydreams about creating an FMV (Full Motion Video) Metroid game. This idea, he admits, was initially too dark to pitch seriously, as it involved a twist that would have made it unsuitable for Nintendo's beloved mascot characters.
Barlow's fascination with Metroid and its immersive gameplay, particularly the visor reflections, inspired him to explore the idea further. He envisioned a game where players would experience a non-linear narrative, focusing on player agency and freedom, much like his previous works, Immortality, Her Story, and Telling Lies. The game's premise revolves around a woman named Diana, who receives visions of her future through a brain implant, allowing her to commit moments to memory and alter the course of events.
The game's development process is intriguing, as Barlow allows ideas to simmer in his mind until they fully materialize. He explains that Precognition was one of those ideas that remained in a state of flux until a crucial realization led to a significant shift in the narrative. This twist, he hints, will provide a darker and more complex story, one that challenges the player's understanding of reality and their role within it.
With the involvement of Canadian director and writer Brandon Cronenberg, known for his unique and provocative works like Antiviral and Possessor, Precognition is set to be a thought-provoking and immersive experience. The game is scheduled for release on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2 in the spring of 2028. Additionally, Half Mermaid's other project, Project D, remains shrouded in mystery, adding to the excitement surrounding the studio's future endeavors.
