Aviation Alert: Porter Airlines Dispatchers Vote Unanimously to Strike!
For over a year, negotiations have been underway, and now, the tension has reached a boiling point. Flight dispatchers at Porter Airlines, represented by the Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA), have voted 100% in favor of a strike mandate. This decision, announced on Wednesday, signals a significant escalation in the ongoing labor dispute.
CALDA, representing 35 dispatchers at Porter, has been in negotiations for over 14 months in an attempt to secure their first collective agreement. The union's frustration is palpable, as they allege that Porter has shown a lack of respect for the dispatchers, who are professional, certified, and highly trained. These dispatchers are crucial in supporting the airline's expanding operations across domestic, transborder, and international routes.
But here's where it gets controversial... CALDA claims that Porter has begun training non-unionized personnel to potentially replace the certified dispatchers in the event of a strike. The union argues that this move is unsafe, irresponsible, and disrespectful to both employees and the traveling public.
CALDA joined in August 2024 with the goal of securing their first contract. The union also represents dispatchers from other airlines including Air Canada, Air Transat and WestJet.
Currently, negotiations are in the final stages of conciliation, with the support of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
In response to the union's announcement, Porter Airlines stated that there is no immediate risk of a labor disruption and that they are committed to ensuring safe operations. The airline also claims to have made "fair and meaningful proposals" to CALDA and values its dispatchers, hoping to reach an agreement.
