The NRL is eyeing potential games in both the Middle East and Japan, following the remarkable success of recent events in Las Vegas. This exciting development signals a significant shift towards expanding the league's international presence.
Reports from Code Sports indicate that the ARL Commission is actively considering sending a match to Japan and is in advanced discussions regarding a fixture in the Middle East slated for 2027. Peter V’landys, chair of the ARLC, has expressed a strong desire to maintain an international focus, ensuring that the NRL gets ample opportunities to present itself on a global stage.
V’landys emphasized, "This will open the door for us to look at rugby league worldwide, not just in Australia. We’re planning it at the moment," during his conversation with Code Sports. However, this bold move comes with some adjustments; there are indications that the NRL may discontinue its traditional season-opening double header in Las Vegas.
"We won’t send more teams to Vegas next year, but we will look at having opening-round games elsewhere," V’landys stated, outlining plans for two teams to travel to a location like Japan, with another pair heading to the Middle East. He added, "We’re talking to a number of jurisdictions, so I don’t want to pre-empt which country we go to but the Middle East has shown great interest. Japan is a fascinating market."
V’landys further noted the importance of innovation in marketing: "You have to try something different, and it’s all about marketing; if you do it properly, the fans will come." In addition to the Middle East and Japan, other locations such as England and Miami have also been mentioned as possible venues for regular-season matches.
If the Middle East indeed becomes a host for an NRL game, the Brisbane Broncos are likely to be one of the participating teams. Recent reports by Code Sports revealed that the UAE government reached out to the Broncos to consider playing Hull KR in this year's World Club Challenge.
