Leigh Halfpenny, the former Wales full-back, is poised to resume playing for Cardiff after signing a fresh contract and returning to action this weekend.
Now 36, Halfpenny initially joined Cardiff on a short-term deal at the start of the season, taking on a kicking coach role with the aim of returning to playing once his calf injury healed. Approaching his 37th birthday just before Christmas, he has agreed to stay on at the Arms Park as a player-coach.
He is match-fit and available for Saturday’s Challenge Cup home clash against Ulster (kick-off 20:00 GMT), a game that could see him don Cardiff colours for the first time since leaving the club for Toulon in 2014—an 11-year gap closing with a potential return.
Cardiff Rugby coach Corniel van Zyl praised the signing, saying, “We’re fortunate to have strong full-back options, but Leigh’s experience enhances the group in a really positive way.” He noted that Halfpenny has spent the past couple of months aiding kicking specialists and young full-backs while also pushing to regain full fitness and readiness for selection.
Beyond his on-field impact, Halfpenny continues to mentor younger players daily and adds another layer of competition and versatility to the squad.
During his seven-year spell with Cardiff, he featured 87 times, scoring 568 points and helping win the Amlin Challenge Cup and the Anglo-W Welsh Cup. After stints with Toulon in France, the Scarlets, the Crusaders in New Zealand, and Harlequins, he also contributed to the Wales backroom team on the 2025 Japan tour.
