Breaking News: Lane Thomas, the outfielder, just inked a deal with the Kansas City Royals, but his recent performance has been a rollercoaster! This one-year contract is worth $5.25 million, and that's just the base salary. He has the potential to earn an extra $1 million in performance bonuses.
Thomas's journey this year has been marked by both highs and lows. While he managed to drive in nine runs for Cleveland during the 2024 AL Division Series against Detroit, his batting average was only .160, with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 125 at-bats across 39 games due to injuries.
But here's where it gets controversial... In 2023, while playing for Washington, Thomas had a stellar season, batting .268 and setting career highs with 28 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. It shows how quickly things can change in baseball.
Injuries plagued Thomas this year. He was sidelined between April 8-15 due to a bone bruise in his right wrist, sustained when hit by a pitch. He missed more time from April 19 to May 22 because of the same injury. He was also out from May 26 to June 9 because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He played his last big league game on July 4, before being sidelined again due to the foot injury. He did appear in three Double-A games from Sept. 2-5 as part of an injury rehabilitation assignment and had surgery on September 23.
Remember that incredible grand slam? A year earlier, he hit a tiebreaking grand slam off Detroit ace Tarik Skubal in Game 5 of an AL Wild Card Series.
Thomas was previously under a one-year contract for $7,825,000, avoiding salary arbitration, before becoming a free agent last month.
Now 30 years old, Thomas has a career .242 average with 76 home runs and 254 RBIs across seven seasons. He played for St. Louis (2019-21), Washington (2021-24), and the Guardians. The Guardians acquired him from the Nationals ahead of the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for infielder Jose Tena, left-hander Alex Clemmey, and infielder Rafael Ramirez Jr.
What do you think of Thomas's potential with the Royals? Will he bounce back to his 2023 form, or will injuries continue to be a factor? Share your thoughts in the comments!
